LYRICA FOR FIBROMYALGIA
A Different Approach
Lyrica for fibromyalgia also known as (Pregabalin), is the first medication approved by the FDA in 2007 to treat fibromyalgia. Scientists don't know exactly how this drug helps reduce some of the
symptoms
associated with fibromyalgia, but it's believed to block specific nerve signals to the brain. Many believe this is due to one of the proposed
causes
of this disorder which is some type nervous system dysfunction.
These dysfunctions cause the nerves to become overactive. This can overwhelm the brain with too many signals and make individuals overly sensitive to what others would consider mild pain or discomfort. This sensitivity can cause muscles to contract and spasm making them stiff and sore. When using Lyrica for fibromyalgia treatment, it's thought to intervene in this process which reduces the amount of painful episodes.
Lyrica is not an anti-depressant. It's in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. These types of medications are commonly used to treat epileptic seizures and nerve pain from diabetes and shingles; but doctors have found it can be used as a different approach to treating fibromyalgia. It's a potential habit forming drug so its use should be closely monitored by your doctor.
It's extremely important not to take more than you're prescribed and not to suddenly stop its use. This can cause headaches, stomach pain, diarrhea and abnormal sleep patterns. Many people have noticed improvements in just one week.
Lyrica side effects can unfortunately offset these benefits in some people. Below is a list of moderate and severe symptoms experienced in some patients:
MODERATE
• Mild Dizziness
• Sleepiness
• Blurred Vision
• Dry Mouth
• Weight Gain
• Trouble Concentrating
SEVERE
• Swelling of the Hands, Feet, Face, Tongue, Neck or Mouth
• Trouble breathing
• Hives
• Blisters
Combining Lyrica with other medications including herbs or
supplements
can have dangerous reactions, so it's extremely important to discuss this with your doctor. This also includes medication for high blood pressure and diabetes. One thing that concerns me the most about this drug is that if Pfizer scientists don't know exactly how their lyrica medication works to help fibromyalgia patients; then do they really know what the long term effects of using this drug are??
If you're concerned about the side effects and toxic exposure of using lyrica for fibromyalgia treatment, there are plenty of other natural treatment options such as
guaifenesin
which I use today. Guaifenesin can be taken even if you're currently using Lyrica or other prescribed agents such as anti depressants, muscle relaxers, sleeping agents or anti inflammatory medications. If you respond well to this protocol, then you may be able to stop using these prescription medications like I did.
